Akamatsu is a rare Red Pine found in mountainous regions in Japan. Identified by its deep dark red bark (different from the typical Kuromatsu Black Pine), Akamatsu has gentle, long and thin needles as foliage, as well as slender trunks. Therefore, it is called "mematsu" (female pine) in contrast to Kuromatsu (Japanese Black Pine) which is dynamic and called ''omatsu'' (male pine).
This piece of Akamatsu bonsai is style in a "Moyogi" informal upright form, its trunk leaning elegantly to the side. It also has a very unique shari that runs parallel along the trunk.
